JOB PURPOSE
HSSE Professional to act as a ‘trusted advisor,’ collaborating with HSSE Team, Supervisors and workers, as a critical partner providing recommendations with appropriate judgment on HSSE issues. HSSE leader to support plant in the implementation of HSSE systems and safe work practices, aiming to cultivate a safe and healthy working environment inspire employees, promote a culture of safety, trust, and care, and enhance environmental stewardship. To set high safety standards by serving as an influencer and catalyst for change, and by fostering relationships with internal and external stakeholders
TECHNICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
HSSE Management System
Support the implementation of a systems approach to health, safety and environment
Organizational culture and its impact on HSSE
Support Plant leaders, supervisors, and workers on methods to foster and monitor a positive culture of safety and caring and environmental stewardship
Communication, engagement and influence
Communicate, engage with and influence line and middle management, supervisors, and workers to mitigate risk and optimize worker health and safety
Regulatory and Compliance Management
Interpret and comply with laws and regulations applicable to operations. Consider the spirit and intent of the law and apply good practice and HSSE principles to reduce risk. Apply legal and ethical standards to HSSE practice
HSSE Risk Management
Support implementation and maintenance of routine HSSE risk assessment, control and management processes in normal operations and emergencies.
Incident Management
Support implementation of incident management system including investigation, reporting, and corrective actions
Training and Development
Develop, conduct, and implement HSSE training programs for all employees
Measurement and evaluation of HSSE performance
Support monitoring and measurement of HSSE performance
Audits and Inspections
Conduct regular HSSE audits and inspections
SPAN OF Communication
Internal: Influence/Leadership: Develops relationships with management, supervisors and HSSE to create/influence HSSE policies, objectives, and strategy to act as a change agent to support improvement in HSSE. External: Local authority, Fire Brigade, Municipality, Third Party Safety Specialists and Training Providers, Accreditation Bodies
Job relevant information (BOUNDARIES & DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY)
Stops work if unsafe, working under the general direction of the HSSE manager with personal accountability for outputs. determines when issues should be escalated to a higher level.
Skills
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field
HSSE Certifications:
NEBOSH International General Certificate in OHS (preferred) ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015 Auditor (preferred)
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in HSSE, with at least 2 years of experience in a manufacturing industry. Some audit experience would be a beneficial. Experience in incident investigations and delivery of basic HSSE training.
Job-Specific Skills:
Strong knowledge of HSSE regulations and policies, particularly as they relate to the manufacturing industry. Creatively performs a range of HSSE activities and leads on formulation, implementation, and evaluation of HSSE strategy, working with diverse cultures and changing business environments. Understands the wider organizational and business environment and the impact on management of HSSE as well as the interdependency of HSSE and operations. Personal planning and organizational skills to meet work/project deadlines. Computer Skills: supports business processes without supervision by understanding and effectively using standard office equipment and software packages.
